The Business Model Canvas (BMC) was proposed by Alexander Osterwalder on the basis of his book : Business Model Ontology. Since his early work in 2008, many canvases for specific niches have appeared, such as the SaaS Canvas or the Lean canvas.
Alexander Osterwalder is an independent author, speaker, advisor and a business model innovator. Together with Prof. Yves Pigneur he co-authored Business Model Generation, an worldwide bestseller throwing a new eye on business model innovation. He regularly performs keynote speeches and conduct workshops in companies, in business schools and at conferences around the world.
He holds a PhD from HEC Lausanne in Switzerland, where he worked as a teaching and research assistant and published extensively. He also developed and taught a seminar on Information and Communication Technologies for Development.
Before his famous book, website and workshops on business model innovations, Alex helped develop and implement the strategy and business concept of a globally active not for profit network called The Constellation. He also was active as an entrepreneur in the banking sector and as an online business journalist for BILANZ.
